Natryl Instincts: Pineapple Weed

Pineapple Weed; matricaria discoidea is a wild herb that can be found growing in sidewalk cracks, gravel drives, and rocky paths. It blooms from June until fall.

Though it differs greatly from a tropical pineapple, pineapple weed was named as so, because of the beautiful pineapple scent that it emits when crushed.

Although it lacks the white petals, pineapple weed is a relative of chamomile. It claims many of the same constituents, as well.

Like its commercialized cousin, pineapple weed releases nervous tension, settles stomachs, and aids in sleep. An infusion of the flowers and leaves make a delicious tea. It may also be used as a skin tonic, splash, and soother.

Next time you see one of these sweet smelling beauties growing along your driveway or walk, snip it from the base to ensure regrowth, and take the time to enjoy a relaxing cup of tea.
Pineapple weed may also be dried and stored.

As always, collect wild herbs consciously, and reference a field guide to insure proper safety.
