Chives; Allium Schoenoprasum, are a perennial allium deriving from the lily family. Chives have fewer sulfuric components than other allium species such as, garlic or onions, but the benefits of consuming them are quite the same.
"Population studies have shown that a higher intake of allium vegetables is associated with a reduced risk of several types of cancers. The organosulfur compounds they contain inhibit tumor growth and cell proliferation, and arrest the cell cycle in tumor cells. Allium vegetables, including chives, especially have a protective effect against both esophageal and stomach cancer as well as prostate cancer. The highest antioxidant activity in chives is observed in the leaves, which are also rich in flavonoids." -www.vegetariannutrition.info

Chives are easy to grow by seed, and extremely hardy. I have had the same patch of chives growing in a terracotta pot for well over ten years.
The pretty purple flowers bloom May-June. Snip fresh chives and their blossoms every day during season and add them to your favorite salads, dressings, dips, and vegetables.
