Red Archangel; lamium purpureum is a short growing herb found growing in lawns, gardens, roadsides, and fields.
This wild herb is also known as red or purple dead nettle. It was nicknamed as thus because it was thought to resemble stinging nettle, however, lacking the sting. Red Archangel is actually a member of the mint family. You can identify it by its square stem, low growth habit, tiny purple flowers, and common maroon upper leaves (in shady areas, the plant stays completely green).
This wonderful spring gift can be eaten raw, infused, or dried. The leaves are mild and the tea is quite pleasant.
Red Archangel is loaded with
vitamin C, iron, and fiber. Some other benefits may include, but are not limited to, antioxidants, immunity enhancement, anti fungal and antimicrobial properties, kidney aid, respiratory infections, and fever reduction.
As always, be sure that you harvest wild herbs in untreated areas and be sure to reference a field guide.
Happy harvesting!!
