Natryl Instincts: Purslane

Purslane; Portulaca Oleracea is a succulent herb that spans the earth. It withstands drought and is a self-seeding annual in temperate regions.

Although considered a "weed" in the United States, purslane is consumed as a nutritious green in other parts of the world. Its salty/sour flavor and interesting texture decorate and enhance the plates of eclectic, Asian, and Mediterranean cuisine.

For a land-based plant, purslane is unusually high in omega-3 fatty acids. It is an overall excellent source of many essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients, as well.

Some other benefits of purslane may include, but are not limited to, cold relief, depression remedy, female complaints, arthritic conditions, stomach aches, anti inflammatory effects, wounds, and skin disorders.

"And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat."  ~Genesis 1:29

Purslane can be prepared raw, steamed, sauteed, or stewed. The leaves, stems, flower buds, and seeds may all be used for consumption.

As always, reference a field guide, collect consciously, and harvest in areas free of pesticides. Snip the plants above the root to encourage regrowth. Allow some plants to seed themselves for next seasons' harvest.

Here's to your health!
