Natryl Instincts: Motherwort

Patiently awaiting the blooms for proper identification...

Motherwort; Leonurus Cardiaca, is a wild herb found growing in moist loamy soils and woodlands.

Its leaves and hairy flowers are as distinct as its benefits to the human body.

Its common name, motherwort, tells the tale of its history of being a mother's herb. It has been found to aid the mother during many stages of life; childbirth, afterbirth, postpartum, PMS, and menopause.

As its botanical name, Leonurus Cardiaca, indicates, motherwort is not only an herb for females. It is a major ally to the human heart.

Some other benefits of motherwort may include, but are not limited to, nervine, tonic, insomnia, hypothyroidism, anti carcinogenic activity, mood elevation, and overall immunity enhancement.

The leaves, stalks, and flowers may be dried together and stored for infusions.

Please consult a physician or midwife before starting a motherwort protocol.

Care should be taken if gathering motherwort yourself. A small percentage may experience contact dermatitis.

As always, be sure to properly identify wild herbs with a field guide, gather consciously, and harvest in areas free of pesticides. Happy harvesting!!
